Calcium Supplementation for Your Child

99% of the calcium intake is present in bones and teeth. If the calcium is deficient, it will directly affect the health of the bones and teeth. Most parents only know how to supplement their child with calcium, but they don’t know how much calcium to give their child. An insufficient amount of calcium not only leads to poor health, but it also makes the child miss the best period of calcium supplementation. This makes them unable to reserve more calcium for the bones. Therefore, we must pay attention to make up the amount. In order to scientifically and rationally provide calcium to children, we must first understand how much calcium each day the child is supplied in order to pay attention to calcium supplements in daily life.

Any child who drinks pure breastmilk after six months does not need calcium supplementation. The calcium in breast milk is relatively high, and the balance of calcium and phosphorus is more appropriate. Because of this, it is good for calcium absorption. If the mothers pay full attention to their diet and habits, they can meet the need of a baby’s calcium intake.

For a baby 0-5 months old, the calcium demand is 300 mg for breast milk and 600-800 mg for formula milk.

For a baby 5-11 months old, begin to add soft food and gradually reduce the amount of milk. The intake of calcium increases to 400 mg per day. So, the amount of calcium supplementation should increase at this time. The main thing is to subtract the calcium content from the milk to see if there is a big gap.

At the age of 1-3, the intake of calcium increases to 600 mg per day. However, their diets are mainly milk-based and gradually over-proportionate to cereals. The survey showed that the calcium in the diet of infants and young children aged 1-3 years in China still does not meet the demand. Therefore, calcium should be given to the baby 150-300 mg per day. Milk and dairy products are still indispensable ingredients in the diet. It is best to drink about 400 milliliters of milk each day, and pay attention to arranging dairy products, bone soup, shrimp, fish and other calcium-rich foods.

After 4 years old, the baby needs 800 milligrams of calcium per day.

When mothers supplement their nutrients with normal diets, the mother must pay attention to whether there is an excessive amount of calcium. Calcium can be hard to calculate, so it’s best to give a supplementation every 2 to 3 days. Even the best things are not good enough to eat. The number of supplements can be appropriately increased in winter.

Another need to remind everybody is that the taste buds of infants age 0-3 are very delicate and more sensitive to taste. Many parents like to give children calcium supplements that are sweet. They think that it will allow the baby to eat more. This is completely wrong. Excessive taste stimuli can lead to a dull response of taste buds, affecting the development of baby’s taste buds. Which causes the problem of picky-eating in infants and children. This is not conducive to the healthy development and growth of children. The flavor most suited for babies is breastmilk because it’s the first thing they drink after birth.
