How should you hydrate your child?

What effect does water have on the human body?

In the world of nutrition, everyone knows that water is one of the seven major nutrients needed by the human body and is known as the “source of life.” Therefore, it’s very important to keep your child hydrated. In infants, water accounts for 70%-75% of their body weight. If the water loss in the body is more than 20%, they won’t survive. Water is more important to infants than to adults. A brief understanding of the role of water is:

  1. The main components of all cells in the body.
  2. The medium of all metabolic reactions in the body.
  3. Media for transporting nutrients and excreting waste.
  4. Can adjust body temperature and lubrication.
  5. Can provide some minerals and trace elements.

The criteria for infants’ water:

For infants whose taste buds are developing, in order to better accept the taste of various foods in the later stage, we recommend using filtered boiled water set to about forty degrees Celcius.

  1. Babies drinking pure breast milk
Children who are breastfed for 6 months do not need to add extra water. They can eat breastmilk and two to clean the mouth. 6-month-old breastfeeding baby needs to be fed, fed two meals a day. The total amount is 300-500.
  2.  Babies being fed whole milk powder
Do not drink water for 6 months. The only exception is if there is constipation, you should replenish their bodily fluids when there is hot weather. Milk powder is a highly nutritious food. In addition to strictly following the method of brewing on the milk powder tank, the nurse and dietitian recommend that the child is given boiled water between each milk powder. The recommended amount is 1/3 of the milk.
  3. Babies already eating food
For this kind of baby, parents need to pay attention to the state of adding food and rice to the child, such as children who eat solid food such as biscuits, teeth sticks, rice, etc. We recommend giving boiled water to the child about half an hour after eating these foods. When eating rice noodles, soup noodles, glutinous rice and other semi-liquid foods, give the child boiled water to drink about an hour after eating. Since at this time, the child is already self-conscious, don’t force more down his/her throat than he/she can drink.
  4. Illness, hot weather, and large amounts of physical activity
In these special cases, first, observe the baby’s lips. If they’re already cracked, you should increase the amount that your child gets. The amount of water at this time is also based on the child’s need and own decisions.
